Morning Pages

mole writing in the morning in his green chair in January Rockydale

About a week ago I started back doing morning pages in my sketchbook.
Here is the full image of “Morning Pages” inspired by a sketch I did on December 26th:

Morning Pages

I wanted to capture the light in January and the quiet of an hour of morning work before the busy tasks of a regular day began.  Below is my sketch book open to the page:

By the 26th, we’d had an ice storm and a power outage-and Christmas! I was searching for something new to settle into and I found it. The sketchy thumbnail at the bottom of page 675 became whole in my mind at that moment. Below is the rough sketch on 11 x 14 inch tracing vellum in indigo colored pencil:

It was only after I’d completed the painting, and scanned and scheduled it, that I realized I’d included all variety of “morning pages” in the scene.
Happy 2014! I wish all of you a year full of quiet mornings to sketch, write, make music, read, ski, and dream.

    This is beautiful.

That’s me in the chair in the morning with the light. Snowshoes instead of skis.

There is so much information in those pencil sketches. Thanks for sending them. We are enjoying spectacular views of ice and snow in the new year light. Happy New Year to you.

What a great way to start a frigid morning of icy trees and snow. Off to Acadia to hike …
